Jnana Yajnas

Jnana yajnas (spiritual discourses on various Vedantic topics and texts) are specially coined and formulated by Chinmaya Mission to teach Vedantic scriptures and topics to all interested spiritual seekers. Jnana yajnas are always free of charge, open to the public, and 3-7 days in duration. CM acharyas in India and outside its borders are also adept in conducting classes and janna yajnas in regional languages, including Gujarati, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam, Marathi, and Kannada, to name a few. Chinmaya publications are also available in regional languages. The texts include Self Unfoldment, Bhaja Govindam, Tattva Bodha, Atma Bodha, Meditation in Life, etc.

On October 18, 2023, CMNY was blessed to be joined by Swami Ishwarananda Ji, who gave a discourse on “Battling the Ego Within.” Swamiji captured the attention of the audience through his clever word play throughout the evening. Swamiji eloquently defined how the ego manifests itself and how one can defend themselves to go beyond this ego. The ego arises from the identification of the individual with something other than the true self—i.e., the body (as a perceiver), the mind (as a feeler), or the intellect (as a thinker). This identification often causes us to stray from the path of a seeker leading us to pursue instant gratification and succumb to the enemies of the mind—e.g., kama (desire), krodha (anger), lobha (greed). Ultimately, Swamiji emphasized the way beyond these treacherous pitfalls is to focus on the ultimate goal and align all parts of our lives with the ultimate goal of realizing the “true self.” See the full video recording of Swami Ishwarananda’s talk here.

Retreats

Family Retreats

Each year we offer the experience of a “themed” Family retreat in the Spring to a nearby resort where participants get time to dive in satsang, group discussion and family friendly activities in the great outdoors. In the recent past themes were “Dharma” and “From Dharma to Sattva”. Parents are led in discussion by Bhramacharini Shubhani ji and children are led by volunteers from the Chinmaya Youth Kendra. Sprinkled in to the weekends agenda is the Open mic night, Bhajan fest and Olympics. This opportunity is not to be missed as families return fresh, recharged and connected.

Essence of Hindu culture is the theme for this year’s Family Retreat, coming up on April 10-12, 2020 at The Manor, Glen Cove, New York. Mark your calendar and see more details here.

Adult Retreats

An opportunity for adults to root in sadhana, this retreat offers singles and couples a chance to take time to enjoy Swami led discourses, join group discussions, practice maunam/ silence and revel in nature. Adult retreats are themed, most recently “Ocean’s 18”, and typically take place over a long weekend at a remote destination.

Silent Retreat

The CHYKs and Shubhani ji visited the The Vivekananda Retreat, Ridgely, founded in 1997. It is a residential retreat dedicated to preserving and continuing the universal teachings of Swami Vivekananda. The 82 acre retreat provides opportunities to deepen one’s personal spiritual practice in a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. The retreat was entitled: The Art of Reflection where the CHYKs engaged in reflection exercises, were guided on contemplation techniques and had the time to just BE. See below for our pictures & testimonials.

“Vivekananda Retreat in Ridgely was a haven for introspection, reflection, and transformation. One feels like a caterpillar in a cocoon, developing through each day of quietude, mental purification, and immersion in God’s grace in every corner of the 82-acre oasis. Emerging from silence into sound is nothing short of a metamorphosis. A variation from most retreats, where the knowledge is passed along from outside to inside (the Self), this retreat is entirely an internal journey, lending the intrinsic motivation gleaned from the practice of silence to carry forward momentum to the rest of our lives.”– Aashika Suseendran

Yatras

Sometimes one has to go out, to go within.  A yatra is a spiritual pilgrimage that one undertakes to learn, reflect and come back feeling refreshed and ready to take life to the next level.  Usually, people need a vacation from their vacation. However, when returning from a yatra, people move from vacation to rejuvenation to a new life – innovation. Difference between Travel and a Yatra

Chinmaya Mission New York normally conducts yatras once a year. Our next yatra to Chinmaya Tarangini Ashram in Tamil Nadu, India is scheduled this winter in December and January.

Our last yatra was to Trinidad and Tobago where we spent one week in our local ashram attending the current Vedanta course and studying Dakshinamurti Stotram and Ramayana.  The yatris also got to visit temples, a wildlife sanctuary and local attractions of the area.

“The Trinidad Yatra was reinvigorating and awe-inspiring to me, and made me realize the vastness of our scriptures in search of the Self. I saw the majesty and power of the sanskrit language. I was fortunate to witness the significance of Bhakti yoga along with Jnana yoga that go hand-in-hand in the quest for the Truth. It was refreshing to see the Seekers blissful in the simple surroundings of the ashram.”– Sanjay Manikar
