In the Vedic culture, ‘Vidya’ (knowledge) was given from a Master to a disciple not for financial gain, but out of their sheer love, compassion and nobility.

Chinmaya Mission keeps this culture and tradition of sharing ‘Vidya’ (knowledge) alive in the 21st century and Chinmaya Mission New York is one of more than 300 global centres that brings the divine, life-affirming knowledge of Vedanta to the modern man. Globally, Chinmaya Mission trains Brahmacharis (monks) in authentic Indian scriptures, runs ashrams and a range of training and retreat centres.

Mission Activities

There are organizations which work in the effect level – for example, providing food, drink, shelter, clothing, to people which is definitely needed in society. Chinmaya Mission mainly works on the cause level – providing spiritual education which focuses on prevention instead of cure. Chinmaya Mission may not have as many hospitals, rehabilitation centers, shelters but what we’re really focused on is preventing people from entering into such places. We’re concerned with connecting our children, youth, adults and seniors from all backgrounds to the Divinity within, which gives them a sense of fulness and brings out their true potential. In this way, they don’t run into depression, suicide, addiction and other such issues. It also prevents bodily sickness because all diseases start at the mental level, through toxic thinking. Our programs aim to change the way of thinking – which will change the way of living, leading to a more fulfilled life.

Your donation will help us create and sustain more activities of this nature in the New York area, inspiring more individuals & families to grow and contribute positively to society at large. Chinmaya Mission runs several programs for all age groups ranging from children and youth to adults and seniors, in the New York tristate area. A full calendar of regular weekly and monthly programs, as well as special events such as talks and retreats are made possible by generous donations from community members like you.

Here’s where your donations go –
1. Bala Vihar: Funds allocated towards improvement of facilities, curriculum development, equipment and activities.
2. Guru Dakshina: The main quest in our lives is everlasting joy and peace. We all know that the answer lies within but without a teacher, a guide and a friend, we would never know how to get there.   Therefore, the knowledge that the Guru Parampara has given us is priceless. No matter how much we try, we will never be able to repay it.

Guru Dakshina has been a tradition to offer whatever contribution we can to the Guru Parampara after the completion of a course of study,  so that they may continue to touch many more lives as they have touched ours.

Apart from monetary contributions, the best Guru Dakshina that we can offer is Swadhyaya and Pravachana – studying, living and propagating this knowledge. Kindly share the joy that you have been experiencing from the nectar of this knowledge and inspire your family and friends to be part of this.

3. Special Events (Diwali, Holi, etc.): Donations made at celebratory community events organized by Mission volunteers.
4. Swaranjali: Donations for the propagation of monthly Bhajan Satsang and equipment.
5. Family Retreats/Camps: Funds toward space rental, transport and cost of supplies of yearly Family Retreats and Camps.
6. Jnana Yagnas: Donations toward space rental, prasad, publicity, reprographics and cost of supplies.

All of these are funded and supported by your generous donations.

Chinmaya Upavan

Although, the activities of Chinmaya Mission New York have been ongoing since the 1970s, CMNY has not had the privilege of having our own home. Over the past years, our Mission members have grown reaching to hundreds of people in Long Island, Manhattan and Westchester. After a careful perusal by the Chinmaya Mission New York board, it was decided that our first property should be purchased in the Long Island area.

About Upavan

Chinmaya Upavan is a 4.5 acre wooded property aptly named by Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda ji as it surrounded by luscious forest-like greenery. It has been acquired by Chinmaya Mission New York to build an Institute of Vedantic studies along with a Hindu temple which serve and benefit our community at large. Located on 129 Woodbury Road, it is easily accessible by the highway and LIRR Cold Spring Harbor Station.

This facility will also be used to host retreats for individuals and families and will include:

  • A yajna hall wherein we can hold all discourses by local sevaks and visiting Swamins and Brahmacharins. We will also be able to host workshops, training sessions, fundraisers and cultural programs catering to our community.
  • A sacred temple which will serve as a place of worship for our community members.
  • 10 Bala Vihar/ Study Group classrooms which will serve to teach our children, youth, adults and seniors Vedanta – the Science of Inspired living
  • A fully equipped dining hall and kitchen
  • Parking

On August 16, 2018, CMNY had their official ground breaking ceremony or Bhoomi Puja in the presence of Swami Swaroopananda ji.
